One week on from the disappointment of defeat against local rivals Aldershot, Haslemere recorded a heartening win against Southampton at a windswept Woolmer Hill.
With Danny Clarke and newcomer Duncan Hadrell in the line-up, skipper Chris Stokes started on the bench and was able to watch as Haslemere took the game to the visitors, working their defence hard.
Simon Alliss ran them ragged down the right and a slightly less pacy Guy Marchant combined well with Hadrell on the left.
But again Haslemere could not find that finishing touch.
Well into the first half, Stokes came on and soon put his side in front, calmly slotting the ball through the goalkeeper's legs after being picked out by Ed Rogers' precision pass.
The second half began with Haslemere again having the lion's share of the attacking play. Stokes had a chance to double his tally and Tony Mayson almost scored.
A short corner was to provide Haslemere's second goal when Clarke buried his shot in the bottom left corner.
As the home side began to tire, Nick Cracknell, David Mayson and Byron Tibbits found themselves playing more of the game in their own 25.
Southampton strove to reduce the deficit, eventually doing so after a misunderstanding left Dan Hollyman helpless against two players.
The two-goal advantage was restored before the final whistle. After a swift breakaway involving Duncan Berry and Clarke, Tony Mayson sent the ball into the path of Alliss whose snap shot found the roof of the net.
This thoroughly deserved victory sets Haslemere up for two fixtures this weekend. They travel to Southampton University in the league on Saturday.
A big cup game follows on Sunday, with Haslemere away to Weymouth, the trophy holders, in the last 16 of the National Vase.
