SUCCESS is continuing for the extra police patrols of the Heatherlands Estate at Headley Down, Whitehill police have said.

Two extra foot patrols a day on the estate have helped police to make inroads into removal of abandoned cars.

The Home Office-funded overtime has meant officers are also able to tackle other problems on the streets and police have pointed to a number of successes since the patrols started in mid-August.

Sergeant Howard Lovegrove said that following a report of someone trespassing with an air weapon a man was found and his gun and ammunition were seized.

The sergeant said that another man is helping police with their inquiries after they came across a haul of class B drugs, believed to be cannabis.

"Successes like these would not have taken place without these extra patrols.

"So far we have spent nearly 150 hours and there is a considerable amount of hours left for us to use," he said.

"There have been ten vehicles which have been found without a valid tax disc and we are making moves to move abandoned vehicles, but obviously this takes time because we need to give notification.

"This is all part of a massive operation with the local council and we are hoping that we will make the area a better place for the residents to live."
