THE scorching summer sun drew huge crowds to this year’s Farnham Carnival - with thousands lining the town’s streets to enjoy the colourful and creative procession and fayre in Gostrey Meadow.
This year’s theme was Rock and Pop Legends, and almost 50 schools, community groups and businesses rose to the challenge - flipping, singing, dancing and jamming their way along the procession route on one of the hottest days of the year.
Potters Gate School scooped the Best in Show award for its inventive Flintstones take on the theme complete with Stonehenge monoliths, axe-wielding Taiko drummers and even a sabre tooth tiger!
St Andrew’s School’s Beatles-inspired entry was awarded the Henry Liu Trophy for the best school, sound-tracked by a willing St Andrew’s Lonely Hearts Club band of dads.
St Polycarp’s School’s entry also followed a Beatles theme, with colourful fish and bobbing jellyfish chasing a Yellow Submarine, and was rewarded with the Wise & Co Award for Innovation & Creativity.
Prizes were also awarded for Tootsies Nursery’s Jacksons-themed entry flanked by a fabulous Elton John-themed Land Rover and Abbeyfield’s rock band-themed wheelchairs, as well as numerous other category winners.
Classic cars, marching bands and even Farnborough Airport’s huge fire engine added to the carnival atmosphere - while the fayre in Gostrey Meadow ensured the fun continued long into the evening with live entertainment, stalls, a craft marquee, fun fair and Punch & Judy show - not to mention the of food outlets, beer tent, Prosecco and gin bars.
All the money collected from the procession will be returned to the schools, youth groups and charities taking part.
