PUPILS at St Mary’s Primary School in Bentworth enjoyed a sunny street party last Friday to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday with their grandparents.

The sun shone and a wonderful buffet (special crown biscuits) was enjoyed, with bunting and balloons proudly flying. To end the special lunchtime, all children received a pot of bubbles and the field became filled with bubbles.

The pupils then gave three cheers for the Queen, joined in prayer and were presented with a commemorative Ladybird book from the school’s parent teacher association as well as a pencil and postcard of the Queen at Sandringham.

During the day, the pupils and their grandparents designed a special 90th birthday garden for the Queen, wrote letters of celebration, and thought about what they would do if they were king or queen.

And grandparents loved the day as much as the children. “We never experienced anything like this as a child. They are very lucky and they seemed so proud to have their grandparents in school,” said one grandparent of the children.”

Pupil James said: “This is the best day. I love celebrating with the Queen!”

Headteacher Jo Ayres said: “It is such a special occasion and we really wanted to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday as a community of families. Having the grandparents with us in classes and for the street party was fabulous.

“The pupils loved it and I’m sure the children and grandparents will remember it for a very long time.”
