FANS are fighting to save Alton Town Football Club which is under notice to vacate the Coors Sports Ground – its home for almost 30 years – at the end of the season.

More than 1,200 people have now signed an online petition urging landlords, Molson Coors, to re-engage with Alton Town Council and East Hampshire District planners, to come up with a plan that will enable the football club to move to a new stadium, and to allow the club to remain at its present ground until the situation is resolved.

Some 1,268 people signed a petition during the Alton Yuletide Festival on Sunday.

In an online message to the club, Alton Town chairman Jim McKell said: "We are delighted at the continued level of support from far and wide and particularly encouraged by the consistency of messages stressing the heritage of the club and its valuable place in the community."
