WAVERLEY Borough Council this week announced tht it will take over the management of The Edge sports facilities from Haslemere Sports Association (HSA).

In a surprise statement on Wednesday, the financial and management interests of the sports complex were stated as reasons for the takeover.

Transfer of management is expected on Monday and a Waverley spokesman said it should not affect arrangements for use of the complex which comprises a fenced and floodlit multi-sport artificial turf pitch and a sports hall.

Construction of The Edge started in 1999 and since then HSA has received several grants from bodies including Waverley and Sport England for improving facilities.

An initial grant £1.7 million was provided by the National Lottery Sports Fund, which went a long way towards making up the capital cost of the complex of more than £2 million.

A Waverley spokesman said: "Waverley will acquire a lease to manage the facilities on behalf of Surrey County Council and subcontract the management of the artificial turf pitch and sports hall to DC Leisure which currently manages The Herons. This will enable the two sports facilities to maximise their full potential."

The spokesman added that the sports pavilion and athletics facility next to The Edge will continue to be owned and managed by the Haslemere Border Athletics Club.

Chairman of the HSA Peter Cashen said he believes his organisation has played a "pivotal role" in promoting sport in the area and that he was pleased at the progress made in stimulating participation by young people, women, and the disabled.

Mr Cashen added: "We have our limitations and we recognise it is time to move on - but to leave the facilities in hands which will ensure their continuing and, we hope and believe, further development."

Waverley's director of environment and leisure, Peter Maudsley said of the achievements of HSA: "These achievements would best be preserved and enhanced by the arrangements agreed."
