AN ‘Operation Thor’ exercise involving a number of the emergency services and other public authorities was undertaken at the Devil’s Punch Bowl to simulate how swiftly and effectively they could deal with a major wildfire.
Firefighters joined more than 40 representatives from Surrey Search and Rescue (SURSAR), the county’s police force, and staff from Waverley Borough Council and the National Trust - supported by six fire appliances.
Matt Oakley, Haslemere fire station watch commander and one of five Surrey wildfire advisers, said: “We could have a hot summer with an increased risk of wildfire and it’s very important to try and test the system to deal with that.
“We tested for radio failure scenarios, searching for missing people, and trying to predict the spread and behaviour of a wildfire and make sure everyone was evacuated from that area.
“Overall, Operation Thor was successful. Importantly, it helped clarify any weaknesses in the system and has left us in a stronger position.”
SURSAR spokesman Becky Thomas told The Herald: “Surrey has several areas which are prone to wildfires and as we are coming into the summer months it was vitally important these procedures were tested and adapted if necessary.”
