THE president of Haslemere Chamber of Trade, Melanie Odell, told The Herald on Wednesday afternoon that following discussions with Surrey County Council engineers, proposals had been submitted for extra flood-protection measures for the High Street.

Mrs Odell said that SCC plans to install a new surface-water gulley along the frontage of shops between the town centre car park entrance in the High Street to the junction of West Street.

Other proposals include doubling the size of three existing gullies between Lower Street and the car park entrance to improve surface water drainage from College Hill and Shepherds Hill.

Additional work and gullies are planned for Lower Street, College Hill and other nearby locations.

"I am very pleased that SCC has responded so quickly and hope the extra remedial works will proceed as soon as possible and be effective."
