A LOCAL man was so keen to avoid being arrested that he ran across the railway tracks in Liphook.

Whitehill police say that the incident happened at Liphook station last Thursday at around 5-40 pm when Pc Billy Aiken was chasing a suspect.

The police said that the man ran across the railway line and on to the next platform to try to escape the officer.

Acting Sergeant Phil Jones saidd: "He was trapped briefly by a member of staff and the police officer but in the struggle he managed to escape."

The officer said that both Pc Aiken and the station's member of staff sustained injuries as a result of the struggle although none of the injuries was serious.

Sgt Jones said that the chase then continued before the suspect was "restrained and detained" by Pc Aiken with the help of two other members of the station's staff.

The suspect was then arrested and later charged with a number of offences including theft and assault.

Sgt Jones said: "Pc Aiken would like to express his appreciation to the members of the public for their assistance."
