TABLE tennis fans can now play at Woolmer Hill School, following the official opening of a new community facility.
Haslemere Table Tennis Club, which was established more than 40 years ago and is based at The Edge sports centre, has teamed up with neighbouring Woolmer Hill School to form the Woolmer Hill Table Tennis Association, using the school gym.
Upgrading the gym for league standard table tennis required new lighting, which was funded by a grant from Haslemere county councillor Nikki Barton’s local allocation fund, plus help from Lightlines of Grayshott and other table tennis clubs.
The new venue was officially opened by Woolmer Hill head teacher Clare Talbot, after which the area Under 16 players battled out their monthly competition finals.
Mrs Barton presented medals to the winners Petersfield Panthers members Ryan Castle and Archie Phillips, and runners up Leo’s Lions members Shumeng Guo and Leo Holewood.
The competitive table tennis year runs from September through to April and the new association offers league matches for all standards on Tuesdays at The Edge, and Mondays and Tuesdays at the school.
In addition, a satellite club sponsored by Active Surrey operates on Thursdays as an after school club and evening open come and play sessions. The club is active in both Haslemere and Guildford table tennis leagues.
Players of all standards are invited to take part in competitive or social play. Coaching is available from level three club coach Noel Fairbairn.
