SURREY’S biggest sports taster event, the Farnham Community Games, is on track for a great family day of sport, the annual event will take place on bank holiday Monday at Farnham Rugby Club with the support of the adjacent David Lloyd Club.
The event kicks off at midday and will carry on right through the afternoon until 4pm. This year, the games organisers are delighted that Eagle Radio will be playing live, thus giving sport in Farnham an opportunity to promote sport and active lifestyles in Farnham.
London 2012 torch-bearer Gail Whattingham said that she was delighted that event would be given such a promotional boost and added that a large range of local sports and sports clubs would hopefully commit to taking part.
The indications from organisers are that some 30 plus activities are expected to be represented attend including Farnham Ramblers, athletics, disabled sports/mencap, Tae Kwon Do, Sailability, tennis, American football, Farnham Runners, judo and a ‘smoothie’ bike, where all ages can earn their own smoothie drink for cycling effort.
Gail said: “There are stacks of great activities happening on the day and we hope we’ve worked hard enough on the publicity to get a good attendance. We’ll be awarding certificates to all who have a go. Seale and Sands Bowls Club are having an open day at their club, too, if you check out their website.”
The games will be attended by the Mayor of Waverley, Mike Band, and the Mayor of Farnham, Pat Frost, as well as representatives from the key partners supporting the sports day.
Activities not featured at the games event before but expected to join in for the 2015 event include boxing, street dance, aerobility, gymnastics and baseball. The Farnham Community Games is part of the national Community Games project, one of the main legacy initiatives stemming from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Alan Taylor, chairman of the Farnham Sports Association for the Disabled said: “We are keen to promote with Farnham Sports Council and local clubs more sporting opportunities for disabled people in Farnham. We have been working in partnership with Tony Hall, the leisure development manager from the disability group ‘RU Able 2’ to help facilitate and enjoy a wider range of inclusive sports. And also with my colleagues on the Farnham Disabled Sports Association to specifically promote more participation in swimming and sailing for those with disabilities.”
Event chairman David Gill added: “The Community Games comes under the umbrella of the Farnham Sports Council and all of the organisers are volunteers who simply want to promote and encourage sporting and active lifestyles in Farnham. Hopefully, by giving people the chance to see, taste and enjoy different activities, more people will be motivated to take up sport and exercise more often and hopefully many will join local sports clubs. Please come along and join in, it’s a fun day, it’s free and everyone is welcome.”
