BATTLE lines are being drawn in South West Surrey as the prospect of a general election looms.
The latest contender to throw his hat into the ring is Waverley Borough Council deputy leader Paul Follows – standing for the Lib Dems.
Councillor Follows, who is Godalming Town Council leader, announced he had been selected as the party’s parliamentary candidate on Sunday (October 6).
It follows the September 9 announcement that Waverley’s environment portfolio holder and Godalming Town Council deputy leader Councillor Steve Williams had been selected as the Green Party candidate.
Mr Follows said: “I am tremendously honoured to be selected to fight this seat.
“I live and work locally and it would be a huge privilege to represent my community.
“My primary task is to fight a hugely damaging no-deal Brexit.
“A Brexit that would have a devastating impact on the most vulnerable in our society, create even more uncertainty for EU citizens and hurt local businesses.
“I will also take the Lib Dem fight to protect local services, such as our schools; work to increase local affordable housing and campaign for real measures to tackle climate change. Things that this government has just ignored. It is time we ‘Demand Better’ of our politicians.
“I am calling on everyone in South West Surrey who thinks that a no-deal Brexit is bad for this country to vote Liberal Democrat in the forthcoming general election, in order to defeat Boris Johnson’s government.”
