A YOUNG composer from Grayshott is a winner of the BBC Proms Inspire Composers’ Competition 2016.
Fifteen-year-old Shoshanah Sievers’ composition was judged by seven contemporary composers and musicians who were looking for pieces which were “original, unique and inspiring”.
The competition had hundreds of entries and Shoshanah’s composition, ‘Les Nuances de la Lumière’ (Shades of Light), for solo violin will now be performed by a member of the Aurora Orchestra in a concert at the BBC’s Radio Theatre as part of a Proms Extra event on August 15.
It will be recorded for future broadcast on Radio 3. Shoshanah will also receive a BBC commission.
Initially, Shoshanah wrote the piece to play in a violin recital earlier this year. Her composition was one of two winners in the competition’s lower junior category and there were just six winning entries in three age groups.
The young virtuoso started composing when she was six.
Three years later she began composition lessons at the junior department of the Royal College of Music.
At 11, Shoshanah became the youngest-ever winner of the Joan Weller Prize for composition at the Royal College of Music.
Three years ago, the Royal College of Music commissioned her to write a piece for eight hands on one piano, which was premiered at the Jacques Samuel Intercollegiate Piano Competition.
Shoshanah is well-known as a violinist and she has given many recitals throughout the South East.
Her local performances have included appearances for Grayshott Concerts and working with Karl Jenkins when she played the violin solo ‘Solitude’ in his work The Peacemakers, performing Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major with the London Mozart Players, and Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor with the Petersfield Orchestra.
In addition to her music, Shoshanah is also an able mathematician, gaining an A* in her maths A-level at just 13.
