A SELECTION of talented young performers from Surrey Arts will take part in a special concert at Farnham Maltings on Tuesday, November 22, to celebrate the extraordinary range of talents of Surrey’s young musicians and singers.

Four of Surrey’s leading young music ensembles will demonstrate the wide range of musical styles and high standards of music-making in Surrey’s schools.

Those taking part include Waverley Youth Training Choir and Surrey Youth Training Choir, which offer keen young singers between the ages of nine to 13 the opportunity to sing to a high standard while developing their performance skills under expert guidance.

Led by some of the best vocal coaches and conductors working with young voices in the UK, the choirs perform a mix of songs both contemporary and classic and have been invited to take part in prestigious concerts and tours.

Surrey County Youth Jazz Orchestra, who will also be in attendance, was formed more than 25 years ago and is one of the flagship orchestral ensembles organised by Surrey Arts.

The orchestra has a classic ‘Big Band’ instrumentation and plays music from the swing era through to modern jazz/rock pieces. It has performed in venues all over the county, in schools, theatres, jazz clubs and concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall.

Visitors will also be treated to the Cranleigh Youth Wind Band, which encompasses three bands for children and young people who play brass, woodwind and percussion instruments in the Cranleigh area.

The final group in attendance is the Crafty Clarinets. This ensemble is made up of six clarinetists who are also members of other Surrey Arts ensembles. They perform a wide range of interesting repertoire and rehearse on Saturday mornings at The Matthew Arnold School in Staines.

The concert, organised in association with Surrey Arts, brings together just some of the many hundreds of young music-makers receiving lessons in Surrey’s schools and music centres.

The standard of music teaching and performance in the county is recognised nationally with many ensembles appearing in concerts throughout the UK.

The concert is a benefit performance for charity Citizens Advice Waverley and is presented in association with Surrey Arts and the Surrey Music Hub.

Tickets are £14 each or £12 if booked in advance and are obtainable from the box office on 01252 745444, or online at www.farnhammaltings.com. Doors open at 6.45pm, for a 7.30pm start.
