AN Alton schoolgirl hanged herself because she thought her boyfriend was going to leave her, an inquest heard this week.

Kathryn Wise, 14, is thought to have taken her life after hearing gossip spread by friends that their romance was about to end.

She was found in her room at the family home in Chauntsingers, on an evening in late September.

Despite attempts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at Basingstoke Hospital a few hours later.

A post-mortem examination revealed she had nearly enough alcohol in her body to equal the drink-drive limit.

Recording an open verdict at Basingstoke Coroner's Court on Monday, the coroner, Andrew Bradley, expressed his sadness at such a young girl taking her life and said that her "irrational" behaviour may have been caused by the alcohol she had consumed.

"I do not believe a 14-year-old girl can form an intention to die in these circumstances," he said, believing that it could not be ruled that Kathryn definitely intended to commit suicide.
