TWO members of Aldershot, Farnham and District Athletic Club have been killed by a car while out jogging in Aldershot.

The two victims have been named locally as 16-year-old Stacey Burrows and 17-year-old Lucy Pygott.

Lucy Pygott had led the club’s U-17 Women to success in their age category at the English Cross Country Championships held last weekend in Mansfield.

She was also 'highly commended' in the Farnham Sports Awards held just last month at Farnham Rugby Club and presented by Paralympic gold-medallist Rachel Morris.

The teenagers were jogging on Queen’s Avenue near the army barracks on Tuesday (November 8) when they were hit by a black Ford Focus at around 7.10pm.

Allan Leiper, joint team manager of AFD Athletics Club, said the incident happened outside the club’s training ground.

He said: “My thoughts go out to the two girls involved and to their families at this very sad time. These girls were only following their dreams to be the best runners in the best running club in the world. Rest in peace girls.”

A 24-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of drink-driving, two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of death by careless driving while unfit through drink or drugs, Hampshire Police confirmed.

The MoD confirmed the man is a serving soldier.
