A TEENAGER from Alton has received an £80 fixed penalty notice for throwing stones at swans in the town.

The 16-year-old boy admitted causing alarm and distress to witnesses who saw him throwing stones at the swans on Kings Pond on September 22. Two people have been arrested and bailed in connection with the incident and officers are appealing for anyone who may have information to come forward.

The incident occurred a few weeks after a cygnet was killed at the pond on August 29.

Four people have offered a total of £320 for information that will lead to the prosecution and conviction of the youth who killed the cygnet.

Residents Kate Rowley, Rosemary Donaldson and a third who did not want to be named, all put up £100 to encourage people to come forward. A fourth unnamed person, who is a member of St John Ambulance, has offered £20 because he says he wants to see justice done after such a "senseless act" against a defenceless creature.

The killing, between 5pm and 6pm on Friday, August 29, was witnessed by people living near the pond. Four boys aged 10 to 15 years were seen hurling stones. One of the boys kicked a cygnet into the water and it drowned.
