A LOCAL family has bridged the tennis generation gap and won their own grand slam in a series of Haslemere Tennis Club tournaments.

Oliver Plant (12) won the annual grand prix for the third year running, beating 60 other children of all ages. He achieved the highest aggregate score in a series of tournaments held on the first Sunday of each month.

More successes followed for Haslemere's Plant family when Oliver's mum Antonia and his brother Ben (14) won the annual parent and child-under 17 event. The family scored the final ace when father Tom and daughter Laura (11) won the under 13s event.

The club hosted yet another successful and well-attended Lawn Tennis Association "Play Tennis Day" last month when more than 80 local children took part.

The event, sponsored by the LTA, is open to all children, members and non-members alike, and the emphasis is placed on tennis as an all-round fun game.

Winners of the competitive tennis matches were under 17s Oliver Plant and Marcus Buckley (13), and for the under 13s Joe Turner and Charlie Boyle.

Formed by a few enthusiasts in 1991, the club is based at the recreation ground at the top of Museum Hill. Since its opening it has enjoyed a ten per cent growth in membership which now stands at 500, split equally between juniors and seniors.

Facilities have expanded thanks to lottery funding in recent years which has helped the club to provide four high-quality courts, all of which will be floodlit by the end of the summer season.

The club also has access on an occasional basis to three public courts maintained by Waverley Borough Council on an adjacent site.

The next Generation Gap Tournament takes place on Saturday, October 6, and all children are welcome.
