VILLAGERS are expected to flock to a planning meeting to debate the furore caused by the arrival of a new mobile home on an illegal travellers site on the outskirts of South Harting.

Tempers frayed as Harting residents turned out in force last Friday when a 30 feet mobile home on board a huge trailer wound its way round the narrow country lanes from Petersfield on its way to a field on Nyewood Lane between South Harting and East Harting.

Angered by notices placed on their cars the previous day warning residents to move their cars to allow the abnormally wide load through the village, or face the prospect of having them towed away, the extra-wide load was escorted by police.

The travellers who own the agricultural field are locked in battle over its use and it is now the subject of a High Court challenge over whether they can set up home in the site known as the Three Cornered Piece.
