FREE car parking in the new Tesco car park looks set to be given to parents of Petersfield Infant and ChurcherÕs Junior School in a bid to ease traffic congestion at the start and end of the school day.
Parents will be allowed to use the car park outside The Grange for up to half an hour, twice a day during the week.
The scheme which is aimed at easing traffic chaos in both St PeterÕs Road and Hylton Road is likely to be introduced on April 8 to coincide with the start of the summer term.
The matter was set to be discussed by members of East Hampshire District CouncilÕs cabinet on Wednesday night.
If councillors agree, parents will be issued with permits to park free between 8-30 am to 9-15 pm and between 3 pm and 5 pm.
The problem of traffic congestion in both St PeterÕs Road and Hylton Road was raised last November by a council-led working party looking at safe routes to school.
In January EHDCÕs parking and highways manager John Elson received a letter from Hampshire Constabulary and the headteachers of both schools asking for action to relieve traffic congestion close to Petersfield Infant and ChurcherÕs Junior schools.
They requested that parents be allowed to park in The Grange car park for a limited period.
In a report to cabinet members they were told it would be the responsibility of the individual schools to administer the scheme and issue permits which would be renewable each term.
An up-to-date list of permit holders and vehicle registrations would be provided to the district councilÕs car parks officer.
Mr Elson reported that the Tesco Store manager had been consulted and was agreeable to the proposal.
