AN end to nearly two years of long tailbacks and traffic chaos at the Tesco traffic lights in Wey Hill moved a step closer this week.
The £95,000 needed to solve the problems has finally been paid by Tesco and the works given the green light.
Surrey County Council had claimed back the money from a bond paid in by the developers of the supermarket, to put right a list of remedial works, outstanding since the lights were installed when the store opened in 1999.
But motorists look set to have to put up with the continued delays and frustration caused until at least the end of the year, when the work is due to take place.
Among demands made by SCC engineers following complaints from residents, pedestrians and motorists about the problems and dangers, are the installation of pelican instead of zebra crossings and lowering the lips on kerbing.
They also called for work on the signals themselves to improve the control and priority of vehicles.
At the moment, traffic is stretched back to the Haslemere railway station in one direction and backed up along the Hindhead Road in the other, during the busy periods.
The work, which is likely to involve road closures and diversions, is expected to take around six weeks.
But there was better news for residents of Lion Lane where traffic calming measures are about to begin.
Better lighting is expected to be installed soon along with "cushion" traffic-calming and other works which will be completed in stages to maintain on-street car parking for residents.
The work is expected to be finished in time for the start of the school term in September.
