GENEROUS shoppers at Tesco’s Haslemere branch have boosted town voluntary group Wey Hill in Bloom to the tune of £4,000.

Customers voted the organisation top of the poll in the store’s Bags of Help community fundraising scheme.

The £4,000 award will be used to enhance the street scene in the Shottermill area, which has been transformed since the voluntary group was launched in 2008.

Wey Hill has become a bay tree-lined boulevard, thanks to generous donations by organisations in the town –and the planting skills of the team.

The ambitious landscape project to beautify a busy road saw the street lined with 60 planters containing 41 bay trees and 19 yew balls, interplanted with lavender, tulips and spring bulbs.

Grants from Shottermill Great War Memorial Trust, Haslemere Town Council, the Community Foundation for Surrey and Waverley Borough Council’s funding from developers made the project possible.

As well as tending all the new planters, the group continue to look after the gardens around Haslewey and the council’s Locality Office, as well as planting spring bulbs on Lion Green.

Earlier this year, the team was out in force enhancing the planting outside Haslemere Station. and enhancung the planting at the station.
