Sir, – One afternoon, some weeks ago, two girls (about 9 or 10 years old) came to the door to ask if they could retrieve a tennis ball that they had knocked over the fence into our garden. They managed to find it and went back to play. Some time later they returned with the same request, and subsequently found the ball again. Today, whilst I was working in the garden, the same two girls very sheepishly approached me and gave me a card that they had produced. It was decorated with tennis racquets and a ball on the front, and with words "To you lovely people. Thank you for letting us go inconveniently into your garden to fetch our tennis balls. Sorry we don't know your names. Yours faithfully Tara and Rebecca." I was most impressed that they had taken the time and effort to do this and it really made my day! Unfortunately, I was in the middle of laying some concrete and wasn't able to thank them properly. So, perhaps through your column, I could say thank you to Tara and Rebecca, your time, effort and consideration was very much appreciated.
