AN army of ‘Silent Soldiers’ stood to attention in Hindhead and Beacon Hill in the weeks before Remembrance Day.
Each had the name, rank and date of death of those commemorated on the war memorial at St. Alban’s Church.
Organisers – the villages Focus Group and the Royal British Legion – then placed the soldiers in front of the church to create a Field of Remembrance for Sunday’s joint churches service at St Alban’s.
It was attended by more than 300 residents and a new stone plaque for the war memorial, provided by the town council and Kemp and Stevens stonemasons was also dedicated by St Alban’s vicar the Rev Richard Bodle.
At 7.15pm, 100 people gathered at St. Alban’s for ‘The War is Over, written and directed by Beacon Hill resident Heather Sale.
Mr Bodle said: “In 1919 there was a party for demobilised soldiers, when 67 men marched through the village to the church.
“The Silent Soldiers and the new plaque remind us of those who did not come home.”
