YOUNG people from Haslemere were rewarded at the annual Surrey Young Superstars 2016 awards in Guildford, on Sunday.
The 1268 (Haslemere) Squadron ATC won the 2016 Volunteering Superstar (Group) award and Haslemere Museum’s HYPE team were Highly Commended in the Community Superstar category. Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, Michael More-Molyneux presented the trophies and certificates at this year’s ceremony at Guildford Harbour Hotel.
It was attended by more than 120 guests. Haslemere Mayor Melanie Odell, the new High Sheriff of Surrey, Richard Whittington and Surrey County Council chairman Sally Marks were among the honoured guests.
More than 50 young people were recognised and rewarded in total on the day, among nine different award categories.
The overall winner of the top award, Superstar of the Year, was the 7th Epsom (Methodist) Scouts Tanzania Team, who also won the Fundraising Superstar (13-19 years, group) category; they also receive an ‘Adopt An Animal’ prize from Surrey Wildlife Trust.
The awards scheme was organised by agency Haslemere Travel, which started the scheme in 2012, and they are in partnership with the county’s umbrella charity supporting the youth sector, Surrey Youth Focus. Sponsored are Savills Guildford, as well as the hotel.
The awards also raise awareness of a local charity every year – this year the youth charity was Leatherhead-based Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), who did a presentation at the event.
