LOYAL Surrey Police Support Volunteers and Special Constables received awards for the important contribution they make to Surrey Police - and an appeal was made for more recruits.

Chief Constable Nick Ephgrave presented awards for long service and dedication at a commendation ceremony held at Guildford Cathedral (pictured above).

Special Constables responded to all types of incidents and operations alongside regular officers in 2016 and they were also presented with awards for the number of arrests that resulted in offenders being put through the criminal justice system.

Police support volunteers were recognised for their work in a variety of areas, including assisting Surrey’s Foundation Training Department for police officer probationers, by allowing their homes to be used as settings for role plays, and acting as victims, suspects and witnesses within realistic scenarios.

Individuals were also recognised for their support in all areas, including community safety, central prosecutions, Neighbourhood Watch, police dog training, automated number plate recognition (ANPR) and women’s justice.

Helen Hartley, Surrey’s head of volunteers and special constables, said: “Our volunteers are all highly valued not only for the direct support that they provide to policing but also for the key links they maintain with our local communities and this awards ceremony recognises the contribution of their previous time, skills and expertise.

“We are currently recruiting a number of police support volunteer roles. The hours are flexible, dependant on the role, and can fit in around college or university studies or school-run hours for any parents interested in joining us.

“It’s an ideal opportunity to use existing skills in a positive way across a variety of roles whilst also adding valuable experience to a CV.

“As a Police Support volunteer you will work closely with local police officers and police staff and have the satisfaction and pride in knowing that you are making a positive contribution to the safety and well-being of your community.”

• Surrey Police welcomes volunteers from all backgrounds with a minimum age of 16.

Hours can be flexible, travel expenses will be reimbursed and role-related training will be provided at the police station or office where volunteers are based.
