AN 18 year old from Farnham has walked an epic 108 miles from Birmingham to her home town in just four days - raising £1,300 and counting for The Children’s Society.
Rachel Baker, who is currently studying drama and theatre studies at The University of Birmingham, set off on her ‘108 Donate’ challenge on Saturday, May 20, taking in Warwick, Banbury, Oxford and Reading before finally finishing in Farnham Park on Wednesday, May 24, having covered an impressive 27 miles a day.
The student has previously taken part in walks for the Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme and has trekked through the Moroccan Atlas Mountains, but had never taken on such a long distance in her life.
She was determined to complete the 108 miles to support The Children’s Society’s work with the most vulnerable children across the country suffering abuse, hardship and neglect.
Rachel has been fundraising for the charity since starting at university as part of their RAG (Raising and Giving) society and is also taking part in the charity’s Everest Base Camp challenge that takes place in September to raise money and awareness of the issues young people face.
Reflecting on her fundraising efforts for the charity, Rachel said: “The charity’s mission to support children who have been sexually, emotionally and physically abused or might have struggled growing up in care are all incredibly important issues that I really care about.
“I originally decided to the trek because it combined things I enjoy like helping people, raising awareness and exploring the beautiful countryside.”
