Aldershot, Farnham & District star Chris Thompson, in his first year as a senior, has been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Cross-Country Championships in Switzerland next month after finishing fifth in the trial at Margate on Sunday.

The early pace-setter, he settled back in eighth for much of the near-six-mile event before running strongly over the last of three main laps.

Down the age-groups, AFD had three team wins in this, the third of Reebok's Grand Prix series. In two of these, they also provided the individual winner.

Emma Pallant, fastest U/13 at both the national cross-country and road-relay championships within the last month, won by four seconds from Laura Dowsing of West Suffolk (8mins 49), while her AFD colleague, Stacey Preston, took third in 8mins 56. Louise Eley was sixth in 9-05 to secure a convincing victory over Milton Keynes whose first runner was 12th.

The U/15 girls' race was a triumph for Leonie Smith in 10mins 38, three seconds clear of Charlie Gaspar (Milton Keynes).

A Belgian athlete, Barbara Mavenu, was third, another second back. India Lee (seventh in 10-52) and Kiri Novak (eighth in 10-53) were the other members of AFD's victorious trio.

Martin Mashford, third in 9mins 31, led Laurence Cox, sixth in 9-35, and Andrew Friend, 10th in 9-44, to the club's success in the U/15 boys' contest.
