THOUSANDS of people turned out on Sunday for Alton’s annual Yuletide Festival.
The cold, bright weather was perfect, helping to draw what was felt to be a record number of people into town to soak up the festive spirit.
Crowds estimated at around 6,000 flocked to the town centre, to browse the market, charity, craft and food stalls, and enjoy the entertainment laid on.
It was a bonanza for the children with plenty to do and see – from traditional games to fair rides and from miniature donkeys and rare breed sheep to visiting Father Christmas in his community centre grotto.
As well as the High Street, there was a fever of activity at both the Assembly Rooms and the community centre, leading to a bumper experience and a perfect opportunity for some serious Christmas shopping.
Plus there was on-street entertainment with performances by Alton Morris and the Minden Rose garland dancers, and music and carols by the Alton Salvation Army Band, the Ukeaholics, Alton Concert Orchestra, the Holybourne Singers Young Voices, Alton Community Choir, Alton College, Bentworth School Choir, and the Kings Pond Shanty Men.
Run by Alton Town Council, with support from Alton Community Centre, the event benefited again this year from free parking, courtesy of East Hampshire District Council to mark Small Business Saturday.
Commenting on what was a hugely successful occasion, Alton mayor Matthew Bayliss said: “A huge thank you to all the Altonians and visitors who came and braved the cold to support the Yuletide Festival on Sunday.
“It was lovely to meet and chat with so many people and stallholders in the High Street, at the Assembly Rooms, and in the community centre.
“We are grateful to all the local groups and bands who came to entertain the crowds with festive songs and music which helped bring a real community spirit to the event.
“Footfall this year surpassed recent years making the long hours that council staff and stallholders spent preparing for the event so worthwhile, so thank you all!”
