THREE people were arrested and more than 30 young people and adults were questioned in Petersfield on Saturday night following a clampdown by police on crime and unlawful drinking in the town.
In total 14 special constables were brought in for the planned crackdown in the town centre after reports to police of unruly weekend behaviour in the Square and at The Flora Twort Gallery nearby.
One youth was found to be in possession of controlled drugs, arrested and taken home and given a warning in front of his parents.
In another incident a motorist was arrested for drink-driving and another person for causing criminal damage.
Petersfield police inspector Chris May said that the operation against under-age drinking and criminal damage which took place on the night of the carnival and the fair in Love Lane recreation ground was part of a long-term effort to cut down on offences.
In total 13 young people were checked for alcohol and three bottles of wine and numerous bottles of lager were poured away in front of the offenders.
Another 18 people, said Insp May, were checked on other issues.
"We will never rid the town completely of this type of crime but we constantly need to be chipping away at it," said Insp. May.
And he warned that the police would continue to mount similar operations in the town centre.
