AN outline planning application to build 14 flats following the demolition of King's Road Garage has been given the thumbs down by Haslemere Town Council.
Councillors failed to agree on the principle of building the flats on the site because of a lack of car parking spaces and concern over over-development.
Jean Arrick said the plan, which relates to 93 homes per hectare, was "too many houses on one site".
And chairman of the town council's planning committee, Mark Lelliott, felt that although there was some underground parking included in the scheme, "the problem of car parking in Kings Road is bad enough and 17 car parking spaces for 14 flats is not enough".
Michael Biddiscombe said that it was "inevitable that something like this will go on the site and it is difficult to argue with".
"It's quite a pleasant -looking building," he believed.
Parking was also the main concern for other town councillors who objected to the lack of parking.
The committee agreed to object on the grounds of inadequate parking, "the notorious difficulties of Kings Road, the size of the building and excessive density".
