NEW traffic calming measures in Tilford have been branded "lethal".

Part of the STAR programme, work on which has just finished, has seen Tilford Road narrowed between All Saints School and Tilford Green.

Designed to slow traffic and improve safety, the narrowing actually makes the road more dangerous, according to David Hayes of St Johns Road.

Mr Hayes has written to road engineer Graham Hodgson, who led the STAR project, outlining his concerns.

"Surrey County Council has created a potentially lethal traffic situation. Two cars can barely pass each other. There will be an accident here sooner or later.

"Either cars will collide or dive off at the last minute, when perhaps in poor visibility, a driver realises he's going to crash. Let us hope they choose the village green and not the school at playtime."

But Mr Hayes's claims have been refuted by Tracey Webb, principal traffic engineer at Surrey County Council.

"The road has been narrowed to slow traffic down and prevent people parking outside the school, so children can see when it's clear to cross.
