LOCAL councillors have called for an action group to campaign for the old A3 to stay open once the £150 million Hindhead tunnel is built.

In a letter to The Herald, Grayshott parish councillor Barry Penny said that it is the best way to unite both sides of the Surrey Hampshire border.

"One way to unite the communities on either side of the border would be to form an action group," he said, "with membership open to all who want to see the A3 kept open after the tunnel becomes operational."

Campaigners want the old A3 to be kept open so that it can be used for local traffic. However, the Highways Agency have maintained that this is not a possibility.

This week Waverley councillor for Hindhead Peter Isherwood made an alternative suggestion, arguing that it could be kept open one-way only, for London-bound traffic.

Mr Isherwood claims that the morning peak period is much more concentrated than the evening peak. Furthermore, a London-bound only traffic flow could join the new highway at the bottom of the hill, filtering from the left.

This could significantly disperse the local traffic and contribute greatly to traffic safety, he claimed.
