Sir, – I was shocked and amazed at the report in The Farnham Herald that a senior councillor had used foul language.

There may be a time and a place for such language, but this was ill judged and not appropriate to the circumstances. I, and many others of my generation, are greatly saddened by the decline of standards in public life. The present perception of both politics and politicians is at a very low ebb. We must put a stop to this cancerous erosion of expected standards.

I believe that the councillor concerned should apologise and should now tender his resignation both to WBC and to the Conservative Party as their leader on the borough council, as it appears to me that he does not have the necessary self control to be able to make sound judgements and keep his composure under the sort of pressure that his status requires.

If he does not do the honourable thing, I would suggest that the council and the party should do the necessary before allowing themselves to be besmirched by such low life language.

If such behaviour is not stopped it will be seen to be condoned and then accepted as standard. I hope this will not come about.
