A GROUP of toddlers have had an early introduction to the social benefits of cycling during this year’s National Bike Week.
The six pre-schoolers took part in a special Wheelie Welly Walk hosted by the Follow Your Wellies toddler group at Frensham Little Pond.
Farnham photographer Sarah Angel was on hand to capture the children’s faces as they experienced the thrill of being on their two-wheel adventure.
The photos were taken for Sarah’s ‘Kids and Their Bikes’ project, which is raising money for charities supported by the Farnham Charity Bike Ride.
Some of the best images will be on display at the Farnham Maltings from July 6 to August 3.
Sarah said: “I’ve had lots of confident cyclists aged five to 12 taking part in the bike project but fewer toddlers and pre-schoolers than I initially expected. I was originally inspired to run this project after watching my eldest son on his first scooter.
“The Follow Your Wellies toddler group was set up around five years ago with the aim of getting children outside and enjoying the environment.
“By teaming up with Ellie Kemp who organises the group, I hoped to give some of Farnham’s youngest cyclists and scooter enthusiasts the chance to enjoy a moment in the limelight being photographed proudly with their bikes.
“For so many toddlers and pre-schoolers, nothing beats the freedom of that first early experience on wheels and that is what I aimed to capture.”
Speaking after the cycle ride, Ellie Kemp from Follow Your Wellies said: “The Wheelie Welly Walk was a great idea and the children loved being out and about on their bikes.
“Even on their balance bikes, it gave a different dimension to the walk. We will definitely do it again!”
In return for a donation to the Farnham Bike Ride Charity, participating families received a 16x12 inch fine art print.
‘Kids and Their Bikes’ has so far raised £560 for charity.
• Farnham Charity Bike Ride will take place on July 8, from 8am on Castle Street. This event is part of the Farnham Festival of Cycling.
