SAINSBURY'S have been forced to change their Hallowe'en display, following a mixed reaction from customers. The store, in Draymans Way, took the decision to take down its large Halloween display in the foyer of the building and is now displaying just a few pumpkins and ghouls. The original display attracted both compliments and complaints, but proved to be too controversial to stay up. According to Anita McKell, a customer from Alton, the display was too scary. She said: "The display was massive and dominated the entrance. It contained a headless body, gravestones and a skeleton." Mrs Mckell, whose daughter has just turned four years old, believed the display to be too scary for kids. She said: "I try to keep my daughter away from things like that, and wouldn't show them to her if they were on TV, so I think it was really out of place in a food shop." A letter received by The Herald this week, written by a reader who wishes to remain anonymous, disagreed with the complaints. According to the letter: "The staff at the Alton Sainsbury's store put on a brilliant Hallowe'en display in their foyer. It must have taken a great deal of time and effort and was admired by many." Nobody was available to comment from the store, so it is unclear if Sainsbury's have received further feedback about the issue. However, Mrs McKell told The Herald: "I am pleased that they took it down, and think that it's really good that the store listened to members of the public."
