Sir, Ð Your front page article last week reported councillor ScrivensÕ rather dramatic claim that at the recent exhibition people supported the concept of pedestrianisation in East Street Òin large numbersÓ.
I have seen the analysis following the results from the questionnaire issued at the exhibition, and this indicates that 434 supported the concept of pedestrianisation with buses, and 280 were against it.
A majority of 154 in a town of 38,000 people is not a large number.
The drawing showing a vision for a pedestrianised Jubilee Square, printed in the same article, would have looked far less attractive if a bus had been drawn on it, as well as a realistic number of vehicles coming out of The Borough.
One of the biggest snags about pedestrianising East Street must be the loss of the seamless join between the east and west of town for which councillor Burden has often expressed support.
It could comprise a wide pavement cutting off Bear Lane from the cross roads. Two-way traffic in East Street and Woolmead Road, and the retention of two lanes in The Borough would then provide our best chance of keeping the traffic moving.
A Jubilee Square in what is now the Woolmead is a nice idea, but surely the co-ordination of town centre roads with the East Street Redevelopment Scheme, when its content and size is known, must be implemented before any decision to carry out road changes is made.
