THE entrance to Frensham Royal British Legion Club, which is also the headquarters of the local Legion branch and a meeting point for other local organisations, was difficult for people with mobility problems to use.
After a long campaign, the chairman and his helpers and dedicated fundraisers have now built and opened a new front entrance which is fully disabled friendly, as well as being much smarter - thanks in no small part to its new poppy handrails crafted by one of the Army’s top blacksmiths.
Janet Caiger, of the club, said: “It is equipped with a portable ramp and has already been rated a great success by wheelchair users. Then we realised something was missing – it was the handrails.
“After much talk we decided we needed a blacksmith and it came to the chairman that one of the Army’s top blacksmiths, Sergeant Paul Hunter, is married to the daughter of a long-standing and active member of our Legion, so we contacted his CO.
“Sergeant Hunter put his head down and came up with a design that was out of this world.
“After constructing the railings, he travelled from Scotland with a member of his team, Lance Corporal Kyle Stanwick, in order to make sure they were outside in time for Remembrance Sunday.
“Frensham Legion cannot thank Paul and his CO at 2 CS Battalion, REME enough for all their help, which is an example of the modern armed forces helping the old boys in their hour of need.”
