HASLEMERE Post Office is staying open, despite fears earlier this week that it could be temporarily closed. Customers voiced their dismay after hearing that the town-centre office faced temporary closure while Post Office bosses launched a hunt for a new sub-postmaster. The bad news came last Thursday, when the Post Office revealed it had not found a replacement for the current subpostmaster, who is leaving after working at the branch for six years. It was due to shut at the end of business on Tuesday. But on Wednesday, The Herald was told by a Post Office spokesman that the closure had been averted. "We have managed to get a temporary postmaster. This means we are able to continue services. We are delighted to be able to do so because our customers are very important to us," said the spokesman. If the closure had gone ahead, the nearest place to pick up a pension would have been the Post Office counter at the Co-op in Shottermill, while anyone wanting to renew their car tax, driving licence or passport would have had to travel to Hindhead Post Office or go online. Now Post Office bosses say they would like to hear from anyone who would be interested in taking on the job. Anyone interested in applying for the post should apply to: Agency Recruitment, Human Resources, Freepost NWW 1675A, Salford, Manchester, M5 9JB, or alternatively can call 0845 601 6260.
