PETERSFIELD was joint winner of the prize for the best original initiative in the annual Southern England in Bloom competition.
The In Between Club's Sunshine Garden at The Avenue was highly commended in the schools section, and once again the town was runner-up to Christchurch in the town class.
Liphook won the small country town class and also shared the best community involvement prize with Shaftesbury.
Petersfield in Bloom co-ordinator Dick King thanked all the organisations and individuals in the town who had supported the event in so many ways.
"We are delighted with the result and are looking forward to next year when we plan to give Christchurch yet another tough contest.
"It is always very difficult for us to compete against Christchurch. They have a lot of council funding and parks department effort.
"We hope the town and district councils will support our efforts more substantially next year, as this competition is of benefit to every member of our community. It is always better to live in a town that looks well cared for and attractive."
"We were thrilled to share the best original initiative award for the PIB watering vehicle which many people will have seen in action round the town. As everyone knows, without the watering there would be no flowers. EHDC funded the vehicle and two months' watering.
"The committee also congratulates the In Between Club on the success of its Sunshine Garden. The Schools Award is always very hotly contested and their project obviously made a great impression on the judges.
"Arrangements for the local In Bloom awards are in hand and the committee is already well into arranging winter planting and developing plans for the special effort to mark the Queen's golden jubilee next year.
"If anyone would like to help the committee I would be very pleased to hear from them."
