AS Petersfield felt an early icy blast, with at least eight inches of snow blanketing the whole area, the town ground to an almost halt on Thursday.

But while children enjoyed a surprise day off school as heavy snow descended on Wednesday night, the picturesque winter wonderland brought misery and chaos to the roads and other transport links.
