A SPECIAL farewell was said by Haslemere's outgoing mayor Jean Arrick, who hosted a civic reception to thank many of the familiar faces in the town for their efforts. The reception was held at the town's Lythe Hill Hotel and guests included local volunteers, councillors, former MP Virginia Bottomley, county councillor Christine Stevens and representatives from neighbouring parishes. Mrs Arrick, whose year-long term ended last night (Thursday), paid tribute to many of the people she had met during her time as mayor. "It is simply amazing how many voluntary organisations exist for the benefit of the community," she said. "It has been a great pleasure and honour to meet many new people this year and to learn about the social, charitable, sporting, artistic, academic, musical, dramatic, cultural and horticultural activities that are taking place in Haslemere. "The voluntary sector consists of huge numbers of amazing people who are both dedicated and enthusiastic. " I can only say that I am sorry if I have not managed to get to your event or AGM as there are so many going on. "This has been an incredibly busy year for me but never dull. Probably the most difficult moment was having to judge the best-decorated stall at the Shottermill Junior School fete as there were so many excellent and colourful displays. "There are too many of you who have made significant contributions to the community to name individuals." Mrs Arrick thanked the town council staff for their work as well as her husband Andy and children Lindsey, David and Stephen for their encouragement and support. Last night's (Thursday's) annual town council meeting was expected to confirm that the deputy mayor, Michael Dover, would take over from Mrs Arrick as mayor for the next year. • Pictured above: Jean Arrick's departure is announced by town crier Terry Burns.
