THE scene is set for this weekend’s re-enactment of the 1643 ‘Battle of Alton’ by the English Civil War Society (ECWS).
Staged this Sunday and Monday and organised by ECWS in partnership with Alton Town Council, there will be ‘living history’ displays in St Lawrence Churchyard, drills in the Market Square, marches through the town centre and a ‘battle’ on Flood Meadows.
The re-enactment will culminate each day with a siege of St Lawrence, to replicate the last-ditch stand of Royalist leader Colonel Richard Boles.
Maps depicting Alton’s Civil War history, and a book on The Battle of Alton by Peter Cansfield are available from the Alton Herald office in the Market Square, proceeds to Alton Lions.
