MORE than 100 people gathered at Haslemere's war memorial on the morning of the Queen Mother's funeral to pay tribute to the life of a "remarkable lady".

On the bright and sunny Tuesday morning, people of all ages stood in silence for two minutes from 11-30 am, the time of the start of the funeral service in Westminster Abbey, to pay their respects and to take part in a short service conducted by the Rector of Haslemere, the Reverend Norman Jones.

The gathering included local residents and traders from businesses in the town, as well as representatives of the town council and the Haslemere Society.

Marking the occasion, the Mayor of Haslemere, Michael Barnes, who was accompanied by his wife Sarah, said: "I think on such an occasion as this it is difficult to find the right words to express our sorrow and sympathy for Her Majesty the Queen and her family."

Mr Barnes then read an anonymous poem which he believed conveyed many of the feelings of the people of Haslemere. The president of Haslemere Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Melanie Odell, invited people to join her in the two minutes' silence.

"The Queen Mother was a remarkable lady," she said.

After the silence, a floral wreath made of white orchids

and other flowers complemented by pale blue feathers, was laid by Mr Barnes on behalf of Haslemere Town Council and Haslemere residents.

A arrangement of pale pink roses was laid by Mrs Odell on behalf of the chamber of commerce, along with several other floral tributes.

Elsewhere in the town, schools and businesses paid their own tributes to the Queen Mother with two minutes' silence

Tesco's and Somerfield supermarkets closed their stores between 10-30 am and 1 pm, and other shops joined the two minutes silence at 11-30 am. High Street banks such as NatWest, Barclays and Lloyds TSB also observed the silence.

Many local schools remembered the life of the Queen Mother, including Woolmer Hill , St Bartholomew's Primary and St Mary's Primary, Chiddingfold, where children were given the opportunity to watch the funeral procession live on television.
