MORE than 3,500 festive people visited the Farnham Christmas Tree Festival at St Andrew’s Church - including almost 600 on a Sunday afternoon, in spite of the awful weather.
A total of 107 trees were decorated this year by local charities, scouts, churches, choirs and music groups, individual families, businesses including The Herald, book clubs and schools, as well as quilters, lace makers, spinners, weavers and youth groups.
Meg Daniels, one of the organisers, said: “It was a wonderful event for the whole community to either take part or visit free of charge which was appreciated.
“People marvelled at the exquisite work from the crafts folk and the inspiration and energy from Creative Response building a huge weird and wonderful tree.
“We have received so many compliments about the event and some folk have been moved to tears.”
Homemade soup and baked goodies were most popular each day in the pop-up cafe. People were able to sit and chat while children played with the toys provided.
Throughout the festival there was a full programme of music with singers, pianists, strings and the enthusiastic ukulele players. Choirs, handbell ringers, organ, a jazz band and wind ensemble were all well received and appreciated.
Prizes were awarded for the three most popular trees voted for by the public, with first place going to Creative Response, second to St Andrew’s Infants School and third to charity Post 19. Fourth place was shared by Potters Gate School and Sure Start.
• St Andrew’s busy festive season will continue today (Tuesday) with a Lunchtime Carols and Readings service, at 1.10pm for 40 minutes. All are welcome and refreshments will be available.
