TRAFFIC calming measures to slow down traffic travelling through Kingsley will be installed in this financial year, the parish council has revealed.
Meetings between the council, police and Hampshire County Council have resulted in a package of measures being agreed to reinforce the current 40 mph speed limit on the B3004 through the village, and make the busy road safer for pedestrians to cross.
Kingsley Parish Council chairman Colin Neville told last weekÕs meeting that the county council had to give priority for major traffic calming measures to those areas where there have been a large number of accidents as part of a Òblood on the road policyÓ.
But he said that measures to highlight the villageÕs speed limit and point out the dangers of bends through Kingsley could be implemented to help reduce the speed of traffic.
He said: ÒThat is the policy that we we have to abide by whether we like it or not but at least we can make people more aware that they are going through a village and should slow down.Ó
Mr Neville said that the county council had promised that in this financial year the village will be getting gateway signs at either end of the village and coloured strips emphasising the speed limit to motorists.
On top of this, new signage is to be erected near the two major bends in the village near the Kingsley Centre and industrial estate urging motorists to slow down before they negotiate them.
In the next financial year plans are also in the pipeline to create two new crossing points in the village to help pedestrians.
Mr Neville told the meeting that the parish council had not abandoned its fight for a 30 mph speed limit but pointed out the expense of such a scheme.
