HEAVIER snow as Storm Emma hit on Thursday caused traffic chaos and brought Haslemere to a halt.

A3 Hindhead Tunnel was shut just before 4pm when a lorry overturned closing the northbound carriageway between the A333 and Hazel Grove. Surrey Police worked with emergency services and the A3 southbound reopened at 7pm and the northbound carriageway an hour later.

The A286 Shepherd’s Hill, Haslemere, was closed and diversions were in operation causing gridlock through the town and long tailbacks on Hindhead Hill.

Nearly every school in the area is shut today and South Western Railway said its service will be closing down early and urged people "not to attempt to travel".
