A CHURCH trail for Witley’s Chandler Junior School proved to be such a draw, an extra session had to be laid on.
The Chandler was the first school invited to take part in a new ‘Children’s Trail’, launched by The Arts Society, Shalford, to encourage youngsters aged eight and 12 to learn more about church history and architecture.
Following the success of its launch event, the arts group is keen to do guides to more churches so that pupils in other schools can learn about their history.
More than 110 year three pupils and their teachers enjoyed a special visit to All Saints Church, to follow the trail devised by arts society members Angela Paterson, Virginia Morgan, Sara Scott and Rosey Skeffington.
Pupils admired the church’s architecture, history and furnishings and answered questions, and also had fun working out exactly what was pictured in its medieval wall paintings. At the end, they were awarded with a sticker and cake for their efforts.
The trail guide has been presented to All Saints to entertain so it can be used to entertain and educate more village children.
Rosey, who lives Brook, said: “Events like this are so important for the children of today, as they provide a fun yet informative environment in which to learn about our local heritage.
“We proposed to Chandler Junior School that one class attended, but as soon as word got out among the teachers, we were asked if we could host the whole year.
“We would love to work with as many schools and churches as possible, to help further pupils’ education and inspire them to visit and enjoy the many beautiful churches our county has to offer.
“We look forward to organising the next one.”
Headteacher Hugh Rawson said: “The children really enjoyed themselves and clearly learned a lot. One of them said on the way back that it was the best day ever.”
