PLANS have been unveiled to create a new transport strategy for Bordon, Whitehill and its surrounding villages.

At an East Hampshire District Council cabinet meeting last Wednesday councillors adopted a district-wide transport improvement plan containing a list of 73 improvements and actions which must be taken by the council.

The development of a transport strategy for Bordon was one of the actions identified and was seen by district councillors as being urgent.

The strategy will also include measures to improve access to the town from neighbouring villages in a bid to improve public and private transport links within the district.

The news comes a matter of weeks after Stagecoach and Hampshire County Council announced that it was cutting bus services in the area to save money and because they were not well used.

EHDC now intends to enter talks with local parish councils in a bid to promote town and parish plans which it hopes many will be completed by March 2003.

The possibility of villages developing joint plans is also being examined.

Once these have been completed the town and parish plans will form the basis of a local transport strategy which, it is hoped, will act as a blue print over a five-year period.

Other priorities which could directly affect Bordon include the push to use financial contributions from developers to fund transport schemes.

Steps are also being taken to establish a new East Hants Transport Partnership which should also be up and running by April next year.

Measures to improve car parking facilities and information about public transport is also in the pipeline.

Under the new district plan EHDC would also work closely with schools and businesses in a bid to encourage them to develop their own transport plans which would encourage staff/pupils to walk, use public transport or participate in car sharing schemes.

The possibility of an American-style yellow bus system is also being examined and could be piloted by April 2004.
