ANOTHER large tree has been removed from Gostrey Meadow on the orders of council tree officers.

Waverley Borough Council said the 40ft birch next to the Wise & Co offices in Union Road, thought to be around 40 years old, had to be removed as it had several pockets of decay and was dying.

A council spokesman said: “The tree’s decline was largely due to root severance from recent and past excavations by a third party for cable installations and repairs to the sub-station in the park.”

It comes less than a year after an 80 to 100- year-old Lombardy poplar was removed from Gostrey Meadow’s Union Road border again because of decay.
